The traditional rendering of the Sixth Commandment as found in Exodus 20:13 is, “Thou shalt not kill.” But clearly that is not a satisfactory translation, for God Himself allowed, and even commanded, the killing of both animals and people under certain circumstances. What the Commandment forbids is unjustified killing, or murder.
